Nowadays, most commodities or services are rated through certain channels.
These ratings, easy to access, are playing an increasingly important role in
customers’ purchase decision. However, results are sometimes unsatisfactory.
There is no denying that such ratings might bring convenience to consumers,
but they are often misleading and unreliable. As we all know, most of the
ratings are based on others’ judgment on the product or service concerned. Every
judgment comes from a specific need or a unique psychological state. Apparently,
blindly following others’ advice will affect our own judgment. Another fact
should not be neglected that some of the ratings are the outcome of a careful
manipulation of companies or sellers. It has become a common practice for some
to pay for good ratings on their products or services so as to increase their
Therefore, we should give a second thought to these ratings whenever we go
    Dear editor,
I am writing to express my views on the playground vandalism near my
housing estate. The housing estate where I live in in the New Territories has
many excellent facilities. While most people treat them properly, there are some
people destroy all these valuable public resources. The playground equipment is
heavily damaged. Some facilities are burned and broken. The graffiti are
completely covered all over the place. Some of the graffiti even includes bad
language. It’s adversely influence the children safety and our precious public
The reason of this vandalism is mainly related to the people who are out of
boredom and the shortage of security. Nowadays, most teenagers like to spend
their time through hanging out with friends. When they have nothing to play or
any recreational activities, the playground may be targeted as an amusement for
spending their time. Due to teenagers are now in the process of building
self-worth and self-esteem, they will try to do something over in order to get
the peer recognition. For instant, the teenagers pretend to be a leader through
destroying the facilities. In these recent years, these selfish and
irresponsible behaviors under the fabricating, exaggerating from social media,
started becoming rationalized. That’s why the playground vandalism happens.
Secondly, it is because of the shortage of security guards. If there is security
guard checking the playground regularly, to deter any vandalism promptly, this
phenomenon will not happen.
To solve the problem, establishing a youth centre and forming a management
committee are the best ways to solve the problem. Since Teenagers are having
more free time, their needs of recreational activity are relatively elevated.
Therefore, if there’s any activity or place to let them spend their free time,
they will naturally lose interest in the destruction of the park, so as to
protect the playground’s facilities and relieve the serious vandalism
efficaciously. Establishing a youth centre is the best way to let the teenagers
getting the community involved and spends their free time. In the youth centre,
it will be provided some sporting equipment, chess game for them to play. Also,
the youth centre will organize some activities for teenagers to enrich their
life and help them to build up self-esteem, responsibility and self-worth. Let
them can get into the community involved in the future easily.
Second, it’s about the security. Due to the shortage of security guard, the
teenagers can go to destroy the park whenever they want. Nobody cares about it
and looks after the place. It’s conceivable that the vandalism will continuously
happen if there isn't any security guard. In contrast, if there is a management
committee to supervise the playground, patrol it regularly, teenagers will
behave more appropriate if they know that someone is watching them, so as to
protect our facilities.
The situation now needs urgent attention! The existing playground is broken
and dangerous for young children to play in. It’s not just vandalism, is a
danger bomb in the society! If the problem cannot be solved promptly, it will
become a vicious cycle, fully threaten our children safety and our daily life.
Therefore, I earnestly urge the relevant departments to face and solve this
problem immediately, so as to protect our children and facilities.
    Yours faithfully,
    Chris Wong
The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling a
little melancholy on that Sunday in May. After all,it was Mother's Day--and 800
miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.
She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother's Day,and
her mother had mentioned how colorful the yard was now that spring had arrived.
As they talked, the younger woman could almost smell the tantalizing aroma of
purple lilacs hanging on the big bush outside her parents'back door.
Later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs,he
popped up from his chair. "I know where we can find you all you want,"he said.
"Get the kids and c'mon. "
So off they went, driving the country roads of northern Rhode Island on the
kind of day only mid-May can produce:sparkling sunshine, unclouded azure skies
and vibrant newness of the green growing all around. They went past small
villages and burgeoning housing developments, past abandoned apple orchards, back
to where trees and brush have devoured old homesteads.
Where they stopped, dense thickets of cedars and ju nipers and birch crowded
the roadway on both sides. There wasn't a lilac bush in sight.
"Come with me,"the man said. "Over that hill is an old cellar hole, from
somebody's farm of years ago,and there are lilacs all round it. The man who owns
this land said I could poke around here anytime. I'm sure he won't mind if we
pick a few lilacs. "
Before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted
down to them, and the kids started running. Soon, the mother began
running,too,until she reached the top.
There, far from view of passing motorists and hidden from encroaching
civilization, were the towering lilacs bushes,so laden with the huge,cone-shaped
flower clusters that they almost bent double. With a smile, the young woman
rushed up to the nearest bush and buried her face in the flowers, drinking in the
fragrance and the memories it recalled.
While the man examined the cellar hole and tried to explain to the children
what the house must have looked like, the woman drifted among the lilacs.
Carefully, she chose a sprig here, another one there, and clipped them with her
husband's pocket knife. She was in no hurry, relishing each blossom as a rare and
delicate treasure.
Finally, though, they returned to their car for the trip home. While the kids
chattered and the man drove, the woman sat smiling, surrounded by her flowers,a
faraway look in her eyes.
When they were within three miles of home, she suddenly shouted to her
husband,"Stop the car. Stop right here!"
The man slammed on the brakes. Before he could ask her why she wanted to
stop, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the
lilacs still in her arms. At the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because
it was such a beautiful spring day,the patients were outdoors strolling with
relatives or sitting on the porch.
The young woman went to the end of the porch, where an elderly patient was
sitting in her wheelchair, alone, head bowed, her back to most of the others.
Across the porch railing went the flowers,in to the lap of the old woman. She
lifted her head, and smiled. For a few moments, the two women chatted, both aglow
with happiness, and then the young woman turned and ran back to her family. As
the car pulled away, the woman in the wheelchair waved, and clutched the
"Mom,"the kids asked,"who was that? Why did you give her our flowers? Is she
somebody's mother?"The mother said she didn't know the old woman. But it was
Mother's Day,and she seemed so alone, and who wouldn't be cheered by
flowers?"Besides,"she added,"I have all of you,and I still have my mother,even
if she is far away. That woman needed those flowers more than I did. "
This satisfied the kids, but not the husband. The next day he purchased half
a dozen young lilacs bushes and planted them around their yard, and several times
since then he has added more.
I was that man. The young mother was,and is,my wife. Now,every May,our own
yard is redolent with lilacs. Every Mother's Day our kids gather purple
bouquets. And every year I remember that smile on a lonely old woman's face, and
the kindness that put the smile there.
Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a
long trip that spans the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows,
we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at
a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a
power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of
mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a
certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags
waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the
pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How
restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering --waiting,
waiting, waiting for the station.
"When we reach the station, that will be it! "we cry. "When I'm 18. ""When
I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz! ""When I put the last kid through college.
""When I have paid off the mortgage!""When I get a promotion.""When I reach the
age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after! "
Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to
arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is
only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.
"Relish the moment " is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm
118:24:"This is the day which the Lord hath made;we will rejoice and be glad in
it. " It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over
yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us
of today.
    "享受现在"是句很好的箴言, 尤其是当它与《圣经·诗篇》中第118页24行的一段话相映衬的时候,
更是如此:"今日乃主所创造;生活在今日我们将欢欣、高兴。 "真正令人发疯的不是今日的负担, 而是对昨日的悔恨及对明日的恐惧。 悔恨与恐惧是一对孪生窃贼,
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. In stead, climb more
mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch
more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The
station will come soon enough.
In recent years, thousands and thousands of people leave their comfortable
homes to study in countries such as united states, Canada ,England and so on.
What's more, A large number of people who study abroad are at young age. Why do
they do it? The problem is worthy of serious consideration.
Everything has tow sides. Not only has the advantages but also has
disadvantages, including studying abroad. On one hand, the developed countries
are more advanced in education, philosophy and teaching facilities, students can
have better education. On the other hand , different countries have different
culture .Contacting with different people on their own is also a kind of
experience. People learn about the culture of other countries , they can improve
their connotation of self–cultivation. It's benefical for us to develop in the
future. Not only can they make more friends ,but also they can learn more
But living and studying in another countries can also have its problem. On
one hand, if the students' age is too small, it's difficult for them to solve
the problem of life. They bear a great pressure, not just the life pressure, but
more of psychological pressure. Today's students lack of experience, live a long
time in foreign country, the kind of homesickness and persistent loneliness, not
everyone can handle! On the other hand, study abroad is expensive.A lot of
families do not have this ability. It's difficult to adapt to the local customs
and hard to commuication with other People. So I think that when students have a
strong physique, positive attitude and good ability to adapt, they can consider
to study abroad.
As we know,There is denying that there are many advantages in study abroad
. In my opinion. For some wealthy families, they can afford the large cost in
foreign countries.Due to the rapid development of economy in recent years,
people study abroad has became an inevtable trend.
If I have the chance to go abroad to study, I want to go to USA. First of
all.I Will learn the local language,so that i can solve the language barrier.
Then, I Will choose the computer professional.I must be hardworking, because my
goal is to get a master's degree. Then, IWill work for a few yeas after I
graduate. It can help me to accumulate experience, and then,I Will go to the
famous city Silicon Valley of America to apply for a technical staff. But I
can't stay in a foreign countries all the time. In order to serve the
motherland,i Will return to our ”Big House" when I become a good technical
personnel. I believe that many People dream to study abroad. I am no exception!
There are many good things waiting for us to discover in the world ! So I want
to go abroad. In this way ,I can learn more knowledge and culture.
To be honest, studying abroad has really so many benefits.Good luck for you
if you plan to study abroad!
